Armour rod
Armor rods are intended to protect conductors/strands against bending, compression, abrasion and recover the damage and to provide restorative repair.
Protection
The degree of protection needed on specific line depends upon a number of factors, such as line design, temperature, tension, exposure to wind flow and vibration history on similar construction in the same area. As a general guide the following recommendations may be adapted to the specific conditions:
(a) Armor Rods are recommended as minimum protection for clamp-type supports and suspensions.
(b) Armor rods are recommended as minimum protection for hand tied spans of 90m or more.
Restorative repair
Armor rods may be used to restore full conductivity and mechanical strength to conductors/strands where damage does not exceed approximately 50% of the outer strand layer and when it is located at point of support or within the mid span area.
Refer to Section Armor Splice for repair damage in the support area.
Tapping
Tapping over applied Armor rods is permissible. Where it is know that tapping clamps will be installed over armor rods it is essential that the rods be thoroughly scratch brushed and an inhibitor applied.
Application and inspection
Ensure the correct size fitting is used. For detailed method of installation refer to application instructions
Ball end/Parrot bill end rods
Armor rods are ball ended. For extra high voltage Parrot Bill ends are supplied
Single and double support length
When armoring is required for double support of conductor, the rods are longer than for single support.
Material used
Armor rods are made of material compatible with the conductor to which they are applied.
Production Characteristics
l Color Code: Assist in identification of conductor size
l Rods per set: Indicates the correct number of rods for each application
l Identification label: Shows catalogue number and strand diameter range.
l Lay direction: Must be same as that of the outer layer of the strand to which it is applied
